Determining Bather Loads

Determining bather loading is not just a simple calculation.  In some codes, it is based on the square footage of the deck, the length of the spa benches, etc.  Based strictly on the DOH and Building Department code referencing the ANSI/NSPI, however, a swimming pool can hold a lot of people.

In a city pool, having wall to wall people is normal but to everyone else, these numbers seem way over the top.

As it turns out, there is a little known section in the building code that trumps the DOH and ANSI/NSPI code by basing the entire area, decks and water surface, by 1 person per 50 square feet.  Although this usually only represents a 10% decrease in bather load, it can grind the approval from the building department to a halt.  Per New Jersey state review, it is up to the local construction official as to which code they want to enforce.

Therefore, be wary as to the location and true use of the pool; this could play a part in determining bather loads.
